There's no need for SA Spectre. Volume 3 of a complete Spectre archives, according to Owen's map, already is half Silver Age. Phantom Stranger already reaches the Silver Age in volume 1. (By the way, should those Ghosts stories go in a Spectre archive too?)

And how about Captain Comet?

I lump CC into the "other genres" category. It would be nice to see it, eventually.

I may be alone on this, but I really, really do not want to see further archives combining Silver Age and Golden Age material. It worked okay for Black Canary, but in general, well, the Golden Age material is primitive enough that I would rather not read it. Especially in the case of The Spectre -- well, even among Spectre fans, aren't the later stories considered c-rap because of the inclusion of Percival Popp? I'm interested in the Fox/Anderson Silver Age material, but if I have to pay for 100 pages of sub-average Golden Age material in the same volume, I will probably pass.

I don't think they would have called the recent Spectre volume "Golden Age Spectre" unless the plan were to do the Silver Age stuff as a separate series.

As for Captain Comet, I still favor doing all of the continuing features from Strange Adventures (except maybe Deadman, if it gets that far) as part of the collection of the entire contents of that anthology title. The non-series material is pretty much by the same creators and of the same quality as the series material, and constitutes the vast majority of the contents of the title over the years. Let's have it all!
Ideally, it would be done in two archive series running simultaneously--one starting from SA #1, the other from about #100. That way, most of the series material (which was concentrated in those periods anyway) would be covered in the first few volumes, and would generate more demand for the ones that follow, which will be heavier on one-off stories.

The "Golden Age" qualifier may have been to distinguish Jim Corrigan from Hal Jordan. All the other "Golden Age" characters so far have been displaced, too.

No. You're right. It seems likely (IMO, obvious) that DC named the series as it did because it planned to skip ahead to the silver age material and leave the Popp strips that would comprise most of a projected GA Spectre V2 in perpetual limbo. It's important to remember that one factor DC takes into consideration is whether or not material is actually worthy of the Archives treatment. With limited slots, they have to factor in quality, historical importance and marketability--and often those cut against the completist impulse. (See the decision to cherry-pick Karate Kid for the LSH Archives.) There's nothing saying DC might not do a GA Spectre V2 someday, but I assume it's much lower on the list than compiling a SA Spectre V1--which would give them two volume ones and focus on some of the best periods of the strip's history.

Plus, SA Spectre can be done in 2 (likely to be a good seller from everything I've heard), and then they can return to the Golden Age for 1 regular and one skinny (Challengers sized) volume without worrying about the questionable Popp material jeopardizing the SA Spectre's chances.

So now they're releasing JLA two weeks early.
Hmmmmmmmmm...
They might just have it around early because they do batch printing and they want to make the money back as soon as possible.
That's probably it.
But part of me wonders if they're compressing the year's schedule so as to be able to shoehorn in a quickly-produced second volume of Sgt.Rock before the end of the year.

Unless they do the Neal Adams stories as a standalone volume ala GL/GA and Deadman.

I certainly hope not!
I want all the late 1960s Spectre stories archived, whether they be by Adams, Murphy Anderson, or others.
In any case, I doubt if Adams did even 100 pages of the Spectre, which would make for a very slim volume.

Spectre # 3: Menace Of The Mystic Mastermind (24 pp plus cover)
Spectre # 4: Stop That Kid Before He Wrecks The World (24pp plus cover)

NI, what about splitting your "Mentioned as Being in the Works, but Unscheduled" category into two by adding "Coming Out This Year, But Not Yet on the Schedule for a Definite Month" (this would include, for instance Atom 2 and Tor 3).
It seems to me valid to differentiate between those titles we know are going to be out at some time in the current year and those we either know will be later than that or don't know anything about the scheduling of at all.

Challengers of the Unknown Archives, V2 (announced Nov 10 '02, exact date TBA; mentioned by Bob Greenberger in the thread Questions for Bob Greenberger, post of Nov 19 as not being issued in 2003)

Elfquest reprints are coming, said to be in the "Archive format". What that means, xactly, remains to be seen.

Shazam! Archives, V4 (mentioned by Bob Greenberger in the thread Questions for Bob Greenberger, post of Jan 7 '03: "Shazam! will continue although Vol. 4 is not on a schedule as of today.")

Spirit Archives, V13-24 (expect 3 per year, but things can change)

T.H.U.N.D.E.R. Agents, V4-5 (expect both in 2004)

============================
Vague hints by Bob Greenberger of possible Archives to come

Stuff by Simon and Kirby; Sandman, Manhunter, Boy Commandos, Newsboy Legion etc. are possibilities (See Bob's post of Jan 8 '03 in Questions for Bob Greenberger)

Another Doom Patrol volume; might be more of Morrison's stuff, not an Archive. (See Bob's post of Jan 7 '03 in Questions for Bob Greenberger)

============================
Stuff that isn't a candidate for Archiving right now, according to Bob Greenberger

Superboy (Golden Age) Archives, V1 (announced in 2001, mentioned by Bob Greenberger in the thread Questions for Bob Greenberger, post of Dec 12 '02, as being "off the schedule and ... return[ing] as soon as possible")

Swamp Thing, because the TPBs are in print (See Bob's post of Jan 7 '03 in Questions for Bob Greenberger)

Golden Age work that isn't feasible with current restoration technology, which butchers fine line work by certain artists, including Mac Raboy and Lou Fine. Affects Captain Marvel, Jr., The Ray, The Black Condor, Doll Man, Bulletman, others (See Bob's post of Jan 8 '03 in Questions for Bob Greenberger)

Mad Archives, V2 won't appear in 2003. (See Questions for Bob Greenberger 2, his post of Feb 7 '03. Poor sales is the likely villain here. The Diamond preorders were for only 1879 copies. The same month, "All Star, V8" had 2669 copies preordered.)

============================
Other things we know

  • There will be 14 Archives in 2003
  • Six of those will be Golden Age, the rest Silver & Bronze
  • There will be an additional Golden Age Volume One, said to be "worked on for some time, but source material has been ellusive" and "broad appeal" anticipated. (See DStepp's first post on New Golden Age for 2003 is ...
  • One of the upcoming Archives will have approx. 256, to accomodate a logical break in the material

============================
All other volumes are unknown at this time. This includes any other new #1s and additional volumes to existing series not mentioned above.

Please make corrections and additions if you know them.

I would not put much stock in amazon's information. It is often incorrect. In fact, that they say it's September more than likely means it will truly be in August!
